The election of Joe Biden as President of the United States (U.S.) has precipitated conflict within Syria on the issue of sanctions. Political and religious figures, as well as research centers, have called for sanctions to be lifted, while the Syrian opposition members and activists continue to support existing sanctions.
On 21 January, political figures and Christian clergy sent letters to Washington and European governments, appealing to lift the sanctions imposed on the Syrian regime. They said these sanctions put inordinate pressure on the Syrian people, depriving them of humanitarian assistance– that does not fall within the sanctions list imposed on the Syrian regime.

The United States has imposed a new set of sanctions on Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad s wife and her father, in the latest round of measures against the regime and the ruling class.
In a statement published yesterday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the sanctions against the Syrian dictator s British-born wife Asma Al-Assad, accusing her of impeding efforts to promote a political resolution of the Syrian conflict. He stated that she has spearheaded efforts on behalf of the regime to consolidate economic and political power, including by using her so-called charities and civil society organizations.
