The election of Joe Biden as President of the United States (U.S.) has precipitated conflict within Syria on the issue of sanctions. Political and religious figures, as well as research centers, have called for sanctions to be lifted, while the Syrian opposition members and activists continue to support existing sanctions.
On 21 January, political figures and Christian clergy sent letters to Washington and European governments, appealing to lift the sanctions imposed on the Syrian regime. They said these sanctions put inordinate pressure on the Syrian people, depriving them of humanitarian assistance– that does not fall within the sanctions list imposed on the Syrian regime.
