Siempre he sido un bateador de líneas cortas. Jamás recorrí las bases por sacar la bola fuera del terreno. Desde que aprendí a batear con palos de escoba, el taco de madera salía con la fuerza de mis brazos por todo el cuadro o a lo corto de los jardines. No jugué en pequeñas ligas aunque fui reclutado por un escucha cuando estudiaba en octavo grado por lanzar la bola por el lado del brazo a 90 millas. Todo quedó ahí porque el día del tryout los nervios se amarraron a mis pies: la curva no acaba de cuajar, las rectas perdieron su esplendor y el radar cubano no llegó a marcar ni las 80 millas. Decidí, entonces, sobrevivir en el béisbol por mi buena vista.
