now, you can see it starting to make its way here in laplace parish. that s where the strongest winds will be for this system. yes, it s been downgraded, the impact, so they re still very much the same. i want to zoom into our radar. you can see the bulk of this moisture, what we call feeder bands starting to make its way across new orleans. so that s what ali is starting to see. the problem that i have with this, this is the bands making their way across lake pontchartrain. so we could see some torrential rain that they don t need. so the storm surge is definitely going to be up. and we ll watch some high tide that will make its way in later on tomorrow morning. so you can see the front end, now we re dealing with a cat 2 hurricane. it is starting to lose its force a little bit. what happens here is the pressure starts to go up and then the wind speeds, they start to go down.

we are still not done. it continues to make its way into areas of the northeast. the flooding in the storm surge and the wind is going to be an issue for a few more hours. you can see hurricane warnings are still in place for baton rouge. tropical storm warnings have started to expand. if you re in oklahoma city parts of arkansas nashville tennessee. i do think these tropical warnings will go into place and about the next hour or so. i think this area is going to be looking a lot different compared to what we saw at 6:00 chris. now that the sun has gone down there is still this dramatic severe weather threats. it s the feeder bands that are coming off the gulf, we are still seeing some warning air that s in place. that will allow the spinoffs to really continue overnight. people need to be aware if you hear sirens go down to the lowest place of your home to avoid the severe weather as well.

clogged with traffic from texas to alabama. mississippi s governor has declared a state of emergency. his state was also ravaged by katrina. the national weather service is underscoring the dire stakes warning that some places might be, quote, uninhabitable for weeks or months. we are covering all the angles of the approaching hurricane and the growing sense of urgency tonight. let s begin with meteorologist tom sater and the cnn weather center. how is it looking? well, we just received the 8:00 p.m. advisory from the national hurricane center. there are some changes, but the track doesn t change with this. we re going to get a lot more information for the 11:00 p.m. advisory. when you look at an infrared satellite imagery, the bright colors, they re the cold or higher cloud tops. a lot of convective activity around the core, as you would expect. when it really starts to circulate you know it s still a breathing machine, but also on, of course, the feeder bands. rain to jacksonville,

northeastern side of the storm and whoever goes through that will see the most extensive wind damage. winds right now, we re going to lose our wind gauges. 47 at the airport there. from pensacola through mobile to hattiesburg, biloxi, the feeder bands can produce tornadoes into tomorrow. you notice the heavy rain is knocking on the door of new orleans. the core will be moving in the next few hours. the worst weather conditions from about 2:00 p.m. this afternoon until about 10:00 p.m. this evening. that s when the peak of the rain will be and the strongest winds. 150-mile-per-hour winds. it will tie it for the strongest hurricane ever to make louisiana landfall.
