medical counselling committee: General medicine speciality finds more and more takers as medical students opt for broader paths

An increasing number of postgraduate medical students are opting for general medicine and radio-diagnosis rather than general surgery, with only four of this year s top 100 students choosing the latter, according to the first all-India allotment list for MD/MS admissions. General medicine is viewed as a quicker route to specialisation in sought-after superspecialty areas, as it provides early income stability and requires lower investment than surgery. Surgery also calls for more years of training, greater commitment, and financial resources to start an independent practice.
