The House of Commons passed back-to-work legislation targeted at ending a strike at the Port of Montreal early this morning sending the bill to the Senate for consideration. Dock workers at the port have been on strike since Monday and have been without a contract since 2019.
As Real Agriculture reports, the Senate is set to review the back-to-work legislation on Friday. Federal Labour Minister Filomena Tassi has estimated the strike could cost the Canadian economy between $40 and $100 million per week. The Port of Montreal ships a significant amount of containerized agricultural goods.

Ottawa Tables Back to Work Bill to End Strike at Port of Montreal
MONTREAL Federal Labour Minister Filomena Tassi has tabled a bill to put an end to the strike involving 1,150 dockworkers at the Port of Montreal.
The move drew a strong reaction from the head of the Quebec branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Marc Ranger, who called the bill an affront to all workers in the country.
Tassi’s bill would force the unionized workers back on the job, and it will be debated later today in the House of Commons.
Operations at the Port of Montreal came to a halt after the dockworkers began a strike Monday morning, causing a complete shutdown at the facility.
