few moments from now. it was here almost exactly 24 hours ago now that a gunman opened fire from the roof of a building about two blocks behind me, killing six people, you can hear the sounds of it right there, wounding 25. it caused hundreds of people to flee the scene. a real moment of sheer terror. you can see actually behind us now some of the chairs that they left behind still littering the scene here. police did find a gun on the roof of that building. ultimately about eight hours later they were able to apprehend someone there y re calling a person of interest, they used the phrase suspect, that person has been in custody overnight and several hours and investigators are going through his past trying to learn more about what might have led him to open fire on this celebration of the nation s independence. let s get the very latest on where the investigation stands this morning, i m joined by josh campbell who has been on the scene now for 20 hours at this point chasing
i m grateful for all you ve given to our country and at long last, at long last your story is being honored as it should have been always. february 1971, specialist dennis fuji who was serving as a second tour in vietnam as a crew chief and helicopter ambulance conducting a rescue operation in laos. they were there to evacuate military personnel. as their chopper attempted to land, it sustained heavy damage that caused them to crash land in the middle of the conflict. when a second american helicopter managed to land nearby, minutes later, it was able to evacuate all the downed crew men except specialist fuji. rather than risk the lives of his crewmates, he waved off the helicopter, told them to depart. remaining behind as the only american on the battlefield.

There are all the reasons why the state of Pakistan collapsed in Bangladesh fifty years ago, and not just because of the killings its soldiers committed in this land followed by military defeat at the end of 1971. A half century ago, Pakistan’s ruling classes, aided and abetted by a section of unscrupulous politicians, made it known in February 1971 that they were willing to put up impediments to the constitutional process that was about to be inaugurated in the country.
And that was quite a surprise, given that President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan had visited Dhaka in January of the year and publicly declared that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would be Pakistan’s future Prime Minister. That of course was nothing of the revelatory kind. The Bengali leader had led his party, the Awami League, to an overwhelming victory at the elections and was naturally poised to take
