Growing up in 1980s California, Evan Bloomâs idea of Jewish food wasnât limited to the Ashkenazi culinary canon of his familyâs roots. There was brisket on the family table, of course, kugel, matzo brei, and trips to delis in Los Angeles that seeded his love of pastrami and rye. But the idea of Jewish flavors and dishes extended beyond the common canon.
âSalmon is just as Jewish to me,â Evan, who co-owns Wise Sons explains. âMy mom was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, where salmon is, er, king. We ate salmon like Americans eat chicken: all the time,â he writes in the new cookbook Eat Something: A Wise Sons Book for Jews Who Like Food and Food Lovers Who Like Jews.

“Hanukkah is a natural holiday for a pandemic, really. Potatoes at home,” says writer Rachel Levin, laughing. “It is peasant food after all,” adds chef Evan Bloom, CEO and co-founder of Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen in San Francisco.
In their cookbook,
Eat Something (Chronicle Books, 2020), Bloom and Levin chart life’s main events, “from bris to shivah, and every meaningful and makeshift occasion in-between.” In the Hanukkah chapter, latkes dominate with kimchi, waffle-iron and masala variations, suggestions for a latke bar “like a sundae bar, with all the toppings” and a rustic applesauce accompaniment.
