Students commemorate King s impact in civil rights movement

Teens on Guam honored the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in the civil rights movement by discussing his milestones and their impact. Karina Manlapaz, a former student at Academy of Our Lady of Guam who is taking a gap year, noted King entered a ministry after meeting Benjamin E. Mays, who showed him that a religious career could be valuable in expanding his knowledge with justice.  “This encounter was a great influence on King because he gained vast knowledge through his ministry by attending Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, which led to his powerful civil rights actions,” Manlapaz said.

Guam Veterans Cemetery in Piti gets needed help from community

It s hard to see how the situation of the Guam Veterans Cemetery in Piti could get much worse. The popular community institution is under severe criticism by the national Veterans Administration. Its budget and staffing falls short.  “You can’t expect three guys to take care of this large footprint on a daily basis and conduct funerals of which we have an average of about two a day,” said Tim Aguon, acting Guam Veterans Affairs Officer.  Last Sunday Gabriel Barcinas, the cemetery s maintenance supervisor for more than a decade, died. Aguon stationed himself at the cemetery for the past week to ensure needed work gets done.
