In the spring-calving dairy herd, May is the most important month of the year for breeding activity, according to Waterford-based Ned Dunphy from the Farm Relief Services, and veterinary surgeon Ger Cusack of Comeragh Veterinary. Lameness reducing conception rates Research shows that cows that are lame graze for shorter periods of time and spend longer periods lying down. Their dry matter intake is reduced, and they tend to lose body condition.

FBD records dramatically reduced profits for 2020

February 26, 2021 7:58 am FBD Holdings plc has announced a dramatic reduction in profits for 2020 in its preliminary announcement for last year, with Covid-19 having a severe impact on the company. Profit before tax of €4.8 million was reported. Though well down on the €112.5 million recorded in 2019, the company said last year’s profit “reflects a strong underlying business performance and includes positive prior year claims reserve development of €23 million and an investment return of €10 million”. The Commercial Court judgement delivered on February 5 “provides clarity” around the liability for Covid-19 pandemic business interruption claims relating to pub policies, FBD said. Provision for this increased to €65 million – comprising best estimate net claims costs of €54 million and €11 million assumed for reinsurance reinstatement premium.

Buildings Focus: New 5-bay slatted unit for an expanding beef finishing enterprise

In this week’s Buildings Focus, AgriLand made the trip to Borrisoleigh just outside Thurles in Co. Tipperary to check out a new grant-spec, five-bay slatted unit. The new shed, on the farm of Pierce Ryan, was just completed last November, in time for winter housing. Pierce, who runs his own Agri Consultancy business in Thurles, runs a store to beef enterprise, which sees him buy in Hereford, Angus and Friesian steers in around 450kg and finish them at 28-30 months-of-age. The farm, which is in one block consisting of 100ha, had been understocked, but over the last few years Pierce has increased the farm’s stocking rate and this was one of the reasons for building the new shed – in order to have enough winter accommodation.
