It is important on king day that we do things in the spirit of dr. King. Mr. Sharpton dr. King as a federal holiday was a result in and of itself of struggle. So we do not take it as a day off. We take it as a day on. To do something in the spirit of human rights and civil rights that dr. King stood for. The National Action network started 28 years ago on those principles and weve been blessed to partner with martin who thought to spend this federal holiday every year with us at the breakfast. R. 4, the Voting Rights advancement act. And i want to congratulate my incredible colleague, congresswoman sewell, for her leadership. When Congress Passed the Voting Rights act of 1965, it was a recognition that systemic discrimination based on race continued to deny people the right to vote. As an organizer, i understand the Voting Rights act as a victory that was hard fought by black activists like fannie lou hall of famer and ella baker and our esteemed colleague, representative lewis, who devoted their lives to fighting for the right to vote. And it was a victory of the movement that recognized this right to vote is absolutely fundamental to our concept and our actualization of democratcy. My name is Leslie Leslie kavasch im here to introduce our guest, cyde ford, a former assistant engineer with ibm. He graduated from the university of western states in portland as a doctor of chiropractic and the era pissed. Hes also the awardwinning author of 12 works of fiction and nonfiction. Clyde is the recipient of the richard ray award, in africanamerican literature. He has been a guest on the oprah show, in pr, radio and tv programs across the nation. Clyde is here to speak about his latest book, think black a memoir of sacrifice, which was just released, shortlisted for the book prize in social justice.
