On Sunday, November 28, the international observance of Disability Week 2021 was celebrated with a special mass held at St. Martin de Porres Church in Belize City. The initiative, being held under the theme “Powered by Inclusion, Am I in your Village?” continues with a number of virtual events planned up to Saturday, December 4.

The New National Commission for Families and Children
The National Committee for Families and Children, now a commission, has a new composition. It will now include a representative from the LGBTI community as well as Autism Belize to ensure that there is inclusivity at the discussion table when it comes to making decisions on the rights of families and children. The new National Commission for Families and Children is comprised of fourteen representatives from public and private sector partners including members of the N.G.O. community. It is a statutory body that is legally mandated to promote, monitor and evaluate Belize’s compliance with its national and international commitments to children and serves as a major advisory body to the government on families and children’s issues.

Last Friday Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Families & Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, followed the footsteps of her boss, the Prime Minister, by disrespecting the duly elected Chairlady of Hattievillie, Ms. Sylvana Barrow. Dolores got caught on an open microphone referring to the Hatteville Chairlady, as a ‘wretch.’ It occurred during a virtual forum that was being held via Zoom, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the organization named Promoting Empowerment Through Awareness For Les/Bi Women (PETAL).
