Fall River Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Malone has announced he is resigning.
Malone sent a letter of resignation to the Fall River School Committee on Monday, May 31, stating his intention to exit on November 1st, 2021.
In his letter, Malone cited the progress Fall River Public Schools have made under his leadership, but said it would be best for the district, as a whole, that I pass the baton of leadership.
The school committee passed a vote of no confidence in Malone in February, and called for his resignation after allegations he harassed office staff and used demeaning language. At the time, Malone said he had no intention of resigning.
“I’m basically trying to help people heal,” said Mary Zema.
Zema, a resident of Warwick, R.I., retired from the Fall River Public Schools system in 2019 after 33 years teaching music at all different grade levels. Since then, she’s been busy writing and recording songs in her home studio, performing most of the instrumentals and vocals herself.
“I’ve been doing it nonstop for a year and a half, in my basement for a few hours every day,” she said. She aims to release her album in late June, with some songs already available on her Facebook and Soundcloud.
