The Fairfield Public School District Board of Education met last night and unanimously voted to employ Kristina Gardner as its new Superintendent for the 2022-2023 school year, starting July 1st. Gardner will take over for Interim Superintendent Diana Zurliene at the end of this school year. Gardner is currently the North Side Principal in District 112. The Fairfield City Council will meet tonight at 6 at City Hall. The much-anticipated vote will take place on the potential business district, which would see a one-percent sales tax increase in its boundaries. If passed, the district would be in effect for 23 years, but Mayor Mike Dreith says a future council could terminate it at any time with a majority vote. Fairfield Community High School is readying for its spring production of "Mamma Mia!" late next week. Shows are scheduled for April 1st and 2nd in the FCHS gymnasium; gates will open at 6:15, and the shows will begin at 7. Tickets are available at the door and will cost $5, the cheapest tickets have been for an FCHS play or musical in years. The Edwards County High School Academic Challenge Engineering Science Team took fourth place out of 21 teams at the Eastern Illinois University Sectionals conducted virtually earlier this month. The Fairfield Public School District Board of Education met last night and set the graduation date for May 12th at 6:30. They also approved the FY23 calendar, which will be similar to this year's but will have a two-week break for Christmas. The board approved a project to install LED lights in the basement at Center Street and everywhere at North Side for a total cost of $21,900; Interim Superintendant Diana Zurliene said the lights would pay for themselves in three years in savings. Fairfield Mayor Mike Dreith continues to tout the benefits of a proposed business district for the City, which would see a one percent sales tax increase for most businesses. Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8 has released more information on a death just west of Harrisburg. 42-year-old Harrisburg resident Doyle Winston III was found dead along Illinois Route 13 on May 12, and an autopsy on the 14 th determined the manner of death to be homicide. DCI Zone 8 says the case is open and ongoing. Anyone with information should contact ISP at 382-4646, extension 235. 21-year-old Fairfield resident Craig S. Stein was sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty in March 2020 to a Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery, and he was sentenced yesterday to two years probation, plus time served. Several other cases and counts were dismissed per his plea, and Stein was ordered to pay $8,125 in fines, court costs, and restitution.
