and you had chairman lucas, republican conservative, ranking member petersen, democratic farmer, liberal, coming together and meeting somewhat in the middle and there were democratic folks that did in fact vote for the food stamp trim. there were republican votes that voted for the elimination of the subsidies. that s sort of a prototype if we are ever going to get things done and deal with the deficit. the ironic thing about it is when they were discussing this bill, you had both sides giving quotes to the media saying we didn t get everything we wanted but for this to have the best chance of passing the senate, we took we made these concessions which is a rarity you see on capitol hill. it points to how unique this type of bill is, because you have so many different regional interests and no matter how conservative or how liberal you are, if you have a district that contains some of these farmers and they re being pinched or hurt, you re going to try and do something that takes c

welcome back, everybody. egyptians are waiting in long lines to cast ballots today in the first election since the ouster of president hosni mubarak in february. nbc s ayman is in cairo for us. this is the start of the long voting process but we are hearing there s a lot of enthusiasm for the vote. you ve been watching this. i understand it as well, they ve extended voting hours for today, correct? reporter: absolutely. it gives you a sense, really, as to the kind of voter turnout that has emerged today in these historic elections. the high electoral commission announced they re extending the voting two hours, that s also in conjunction with the fact vote is going to take place tomorrow. all of this is just for the first nine governorates, districts, if you will, for votes. it is going to take place over the next six weeks and that s
dot of blues, those are house, democratically held seats that are considered vulnerable and competitive and if you squint closely you can see a handful of red dots, those are the truly contested republican races, it s a 9-1 overwhelming majority of vulnerable democratic seats. that s one of the reasons republicans are so enthusiastic. a good thing to watch, let s throw up the map of the blue dog democrats, fiscally moderate democrats, many of whom across the country spent a tremendous amount of time this year at odds with the obama administration, saying no, we have problems with the public health care option, we don t like the stimulus, we think the cap and trade bill is bad, 54 blue dogs, most voted against all of those things and at least half will get blown out. we used to refer to them as fiscally conservative but because some did in fact vote for the stimulus bill
