Instagram testing Instagram Lite in India; here s all you need to know

New Delhi:  Photo-sharing platform Instagram Wednesday said it is testing ‘Instagram Lite’ app in India that occupies less space on Android phones and consumes lesser data, before it rolls out the offering globally. Over the past many months, the Facebook-owned company has tested and rolled out a number of features in India first, including its short video offering – Reels. “India is an important market for us and has been a testing ground for innovation… India was one of the first few countries where we tested Reels, and the first country where we launched the Reels tab…In order to expand the appeal of Instagram to users across the country, today we’re announcing the test of Instagram Lite in India,” Vishal Shah, VP of Product, Instagram at Facebook, said at the Facebook Fuel for India 2020 event.

Social media giant Facebook has unveiled a new campaign film ‘Nayi Shuruaat’. It is an ode to the resilience of India’s small businesses during the COVID pandemic. The two-minute-long film shows how small businesses, like The Moms Co., Doodlage and Sleepy Owl Coffee, made a new start and have grown this year (2020) on the back of their Facebook community. On the second day of Facebook’s inaugural ‘Fuel for India 2020’ event, a keynote session was held on how the company is partnering with large and small businesses to fuel the economic transformation of the country. There were sessions by diverse small, medium and large businesses, such as WhiteHat Jr., Maruti Suzuki, Mondelez, The Moms Co., Licious, Karagiri, Wingreens Farms and Vasthram Silk.

The social conglomerate said on Wednesday that it is testing the revamped Instagram Lite app in India, where it hopes to “gain valuable insights” about the new offering before “a global rollout” of the app later. The revamped Instagram Lite app weighs less than 2MB and delivers a “fast, reliable, and responsive” experience of the social service. The Android app supports Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu, but currently lacks a several core features of Instagram including Reels, Shopping and IGTV.
