For some time now, persons here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have been speculating about what would feature in the crater of the La Soufrière volcano once the explosive eruption phase subsided.
Questions surfacing on call-in radio programmes included: Would it leave a lake as it did after the 1971 eruption? Will there be another dome as was seen with the culmination of the 1979 activity?
Then, before scientists could reveal what they had discovered from satellite images provided by partners working along with the La Soufriere Monitoring Team, a photograph surfaced and gained instant popularity.
Massive operation to feed evacuees
The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been spending a significant amount of money to provide meals to evacuees who are in Emergency Shelters and private homes.
According to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves as he addressed the issue on NBC Radio ‘Eyeing La Soufrière’ programme on Monday, the government has spent EC$2.1 million to feed persons housed at Emergency Shelters and private homes. We have to provide everyday 21,000 meals in the shelters - 7,000 breakfast, 7,000 lunches, 7,000 dinners. Then there are thousands of boxes which have already been distributed by NEMO/ Social Development to homes in which evacuees are staying and also in orange areas where people didn’t move but they are finding it difficult to cope,” Dr. Gonslaves said.
