Pada hari Taliban memasuki distrik Balkh di salah satu provinsi di Afghanistan utara bulan lalu, stasiun radio lokal Nawbahar menutup pintunya dan sebagian besar jurnalisnya bersembunyi.
Dalam beberapa hari stasiun mulai mengudara lagi, tetapi programnya berbeda. Alih-alih dengan susunan program seperti biasa, Nawbahar memainkan lagu-lagu dan program-program Islam yang diproduksi oleh Taliban.
Peralihan dalam pemrograman itu jauh dari kebiasaan Nawbahar. Stasiun itu dimulai di provinsi utara pada tahun 2004 menyiarkan berita dan hiburan dalam bahasa Dari dan Pashto berkat dana dari Badan Pembangunan Internasional AS.
