The U.S. is recommending those administering the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine stop doing so for now while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration investigate reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer s office said Tuesday the state will heed federal warnings and halt the Johnson & Johnson vaccine rollout as localities across Michigan scramble to switch appointments to doses of Moderna and Pfizer.
The new system puts an end to the Tuesday morning crunch of eligible people calling in and flooding the phones lines within minutes trying to schedule a vaccine appointment with the health department for available doses.
Those age 60 years and older, those age 50 and older with pre-existing medical conditions or those who need transportation assistance to get a vaccine can register with the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) Bus Macomb Vaccine Registration Line.
They then will be contacted by the health department to schedule an appointment when one is available. Seniors can register at smartbus.org/macombvaccine or call the registration line at 586-421-6579.
Macomb County residents age 65 and older can register to be on a waitlist for a COVID-19 vaccination at a drive-thru vaccination site in northern Macomb for seniors or any other clinics in local communities that the county sets up for this vulnerable population.
The new vaccination site that county officials announced last week at the Richmond/Lenox EMS on 32 Mile Road will cater to county residents age 65 and older, not just those who rely on bus services.
On Friday, officials announced the site in a partnership with the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation or SMART and Richmond/Lenox EMS. It was to be a solution for seniors who rely on bus services.
