Smoke filled the upper floor of the building which housed Timaru’s first public watering hole on Monday, but there was no need for evacuation. Eight firefighters with two fire engines from Timaru and Washdyke stations took part in a training exercise at the former Excelsior Tavern building, which was christened the Criterion, where until recently the Factory Bar and Nightclub was located.
