The Timaru District Council has confirmed this complex in Barnard St will be levelled over the next few months.
The first demolitions to make way for work on the $29.5 million Theatre Royal and museum redevelopment in Timaru are set to begin. The Timaru District Council has confirmed a complex in Barnard St, which backs onto the theatre site and which once housed the Olympia picture theatre and army drill hall, will be levelled over the next few months. The public carpark on Barnard St will close from Saturday to allow for the work which will eventually create access to the theatre s back of house, a council press release says.
She said the new heritage facility (alongside the theatre) would spread over three levels. “The ground floor will have a reception area, a temporary exhibition space, function space, back of house facilities and an education and staff support space. “The permanent exhibitions will be located on the upper floor.”

The bottom images show the upper level of the complex, also to be used for permanent exhibitions. The project’s architects, Architectus, planned to retain the Criterion Hotel next to the Theatre Royal and integrate it into the complex’s design.
