Im ann druyan and the speaking to you from my home in ithaca, new york, and im the author of cosmos possible worlds, deeply truly honored to be participating in events for the library of congress. In the very first cosmos exactly 40 years ago, carl sagan and stephen and i celebrated the Great Library of alexandria. The library of congress means so very much to me because of the democratic ideals of the worlds knowledge belonging to all of us. So its my great honor to be here, and im here to talk about cosmos which is book ive written but also the Television Series i have the pleasure of producing, writing, and directing with my collaborator. So why possible world . Why after 30 years . The first cosmos was an effort to give the broadest possible public, a global public, its coordinates in space and in time. Next, in an interview with cspan, former first lady rose lynn carter talked about the lessons she learned as first ladies, as well as her time in the white house and working alongside her husband, former president jimmy carter. Do you remember when you and president carter started having conversations about him running for president . I do. What was that like . What was that conversation . It was very interesting. We had a friend that wrote and told jimmy that he thought he ought to run for president. Well, we couldnt even say the word. That my husband is running for i didnt tell anybody because we kept it very quiet. And but then once he decided that he would do it, that was when i couldnt he could hardly say im going to be president. It was just something that was we never ever dreamed would happen. And but it was exciting. I was excited about it. I had campaigned whole last year before the governs race. And it was hard. And amy was a baby. And i didnt like to leave her all the time.

But then once he decided he would do it, that was when he could hardly say, i am going to be president. It was not something we never, ever dreamed would happen. But i was excited about it. I had campaigned the whole last year before the governors race for him. It was hard. Amy was a baby. I didnt like to leave her all the time. But i enjoyed it. I learned so much about our state. We have 159 counties. I knew the capital of every county. I knew and issues. That is how i got involved in Mental Health issues, running the campaign for jimmy. Our big Mental Health facility hospital. There had been a big expose and the Mental Health systems act had been passed, and this was in 1963. This was 1966 when jimmy first ran for governor. He got beat that time. We got in late because our leading democratic candidate had a heart attack. But they were moving people out of the hospital because there were like 12,000 people and had room for 3000. It was awful. It was happening all over the country. The

Putnam was old enough to have been his father, came up to his room and said youve got to get up out of bed because were going to cast the vote today. And he said i cant. He said youve got to. And the measure to introduce slavery into ohio and thus the whole Northwest Territory was defeated by one vote. [applause] and yet nobody has ever heard of his name. [applause] people have said to me, if you had put this in a novel, your editor would say no, this would never happen in real life. It did happen in real life. And we should know about that and know about him and hes the one who did more than anybody else to get education passed by the Legislature Later on providing School Public schooling public learning all the way through the university of ohio.
