CNY’s best dishes of 2020: Our critics pick their favorites
Updated Jan 02, 2021;
We’re not going to lie; we ate pretty well in 2020. Even though restaurants were closed for much of the year because of Covid-19, our food writers―Jared Paventi, Jane Woodman and Charlie Miller got to sample some great dishes.
Some were full plates that would provide at least a meal the next day, while others were appetizers that stole the show.
Here are some of our favorite dishes of 2020:
Address: 28 State St., Auburn
Phone: (315) 604-1277
From Jared Paventi: Available as a starter or side dish at the Auburn brewpub, the Brussels sprouts could change the perspective of even the most fervent hater. Roasted whole until well caramelized, the sprouts are tossed with crispy roasted pork belly, ale mustard, goat cheese and honey. Each forkful hits every flavor category you might hope: sweet, smokey, salty, funky, acidic, tangy and earthy. Rarely would you consider Brussels sprouts a joy to eat
CNY’s best restaurants in 2020: Our critics pick their favorites

No one will argue that 2020 left a lot to be desired. But we still had to eat. So let’s give a huge thanks to all the Central New York restaurants that kept us fed and kept us happy.
We (Jared Paventi, Jane Woodman and Charlie Miller) visited well over 75 restaurants this year that had no choice but to adjust how how they served their fine food to us. The dining rooms were restricted to half of their occupancy. These trained chefs suddenly had to plate their creations into Styrofoam. And yet they did it, and they did it well.

Syracuse, N.Y. Any restaurant could use a jolt of positive news while facing the challenges of Covid times. Pastabilities in Armory Square just got one.
It will be featured Friday in a return appearance on the Food Network with Guy Fieri of “Diners, Drive-in and Dives.”
The episode, which airs at 9 p.m. Friday, is part of a spin-off series called “America’s Favorites” for which Fieri and his son, Hunter, asked viewers to use videos to nominate their favorites from past “Triple D” episodes.
