Dispute over plans for New Brighton lido

New Brighton A community group in New Brighton is furious with Wirral Council over money the authority has put towards plans for a new lido. Last March, the authority gave £80,000 to Our Lido Ltd as a contribution towards feasibility studies for an outdoor swimming pool in the town. In a document published last October, Wirral Council said the company wanted to develop a new lido combined with health, wellbeing and community facilities, which could be located in New Brighton, although there was no guarantee as to its eventual location. New Brighton did have an open-air swimming pool from June 13, 1934, when it was opened by Viscount Leverhulme, until 1990 when it was damaged beyond repair by a storm.

Online abuse forced Wirral Council leader off social media

Leader of Wirral Council, Janette Williamson The leader of Wirral Council came off social media last year due to the amount of abuse she was receiving. Labour Cllr Janette Williamson, who was elected into the top job in September 2020, said she has had abusive voicemails, emails and social media messages since taking on the role. In her first few weeks as leader, the Liverpool City Region became the first part of England to be put under tough Tier 3 restrictions. This seemed to inspire angry keyboard warriors to attack Cllr Williamson even more. Referring to Pat Hackett, the previous leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Williamson said: “When I was Pat’s deputy working alongside him, I wasn’t aware of him receiving abuse because he is a man, it’s a completely different ball game for me.
