Councillor s worries over Oxton Fields

It is feared Oxton fields will become unusable if the savings proposal goes ahead (Credit Friends of the Arno and Oxton Fields) A popular open space in Wirral will become unusable  unless the council drops its money saving plans according to a local councillor. Cllr Stuart Kelly was astonished  to see Oxton Fields, a green space between Holm Lane, Woodchurch Road and Storeton Road, on Wirral Council s list of 45 sites where it proposes to stop cutting grass and removing litter. The plan is set to save the council £100,000 and goes towards the £16.5m the council must cut from its budget to address a projected £16.5m shortfall for the upcoming financial year.

Wirral Council budget options slated during debate

Wallasey town hall WIRRAL Council s controversial cuts plans were slated by all parties, as councillors feared they could do serious damage to the borough. The authority’s budget consultation, which ended at midnight on Friday, includes the options of closing the Williamson Art Gallery, Europa Pools and three of the borough s four public golf courses. Slashing support for the Hive Youth Zone in Birkenhead from £400,000 to £200,000 per year is also on the consultation paper. The cuts have been proposed as Wirral Council needs to address its budget deficit of £16.5m in the next financial year. Of all the savings options, the possible closure of Oxton’s Williamson Art Gallery has drawn the most responses from the public and drew irate reactions from councillors across the board last night.
