Since the Vedic days social work practice in India is associated with volunteerism, charity and religion. But as Professional discipline, it started in the year 1936 with the establishment of Sir Dorabji Tata graduate School of Social Work (Now known as Tata Institute of Social Sciences TISS followed by many schools of social work were established. Slowly other institutions were established thereafter in various parts of India. At present, there are more than 500 schools of social work in India.
But even after more than eight decade of social work education, the social work profession is struggling to gets its professional legitimacy. As per one of the UGC circular, for the post-graduate scholarships for professional courses, has clearly mentioned that Master of Social Work (MSW) is coming under ‘non-professional courses’.
