The United Nations Security Council high-level Arria-formula meeting on Media Freedom in Belarus On Friday 22 January at 9.00 EST / 16.00 EET, an informal high-level virtual meeting is organised by UN Security Council members Estonia, France, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States, together with additional co-sponsors Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.   This meeting builds upon an earlier high-level Arria-formula meeting (4 September 2020) on the human rights situation in Belarus. Since the peaceful demonstrations in Belarus following the fraudulent presidential elections on 9 August 2020, we have seen a grim picture of media freedom there. Detentions, imprisonment, torture, as well as death threats are parts of the daily life of journalists in Belarus.

While in Estonia, Tsikhanouskaya will take part in an Arria-formula virtual session of the UN Security Council on media freedom in Belarus, spokespeople for the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. The session will be organized by Estonia. The purpose of the meeting is to draw attention to the unjustified detention of Belarusian journalists and other activities threatening the freedom of the media, which have been implemented by the Belarusian government since the presidential elections on August 9, 2020.

Statue of Mahatma Gandhi to be erected in Tallinn 2021-01-12 BNS/TBT Staff TALLINN - The City of Tallinn in cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is planning to erect a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the capital city. The City of Tallinn and the Foreign Ministry have signed a cooperation agreement seeking to boost relations between Estonia and India and receive the bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi gifted by the Republic of India in a dignified way. Pursuant to the cooperation agreement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hand over the statue to the City of Tallinn and make a support payment of 50,000 euros to the city, which Tallinn will be obligated to use for erecting a monument to Mahatma Gandhi.
