PETALING JAYA: Tributes have poured in for scholar Royal Prof Ungku Abdul Aziz who passed away aged 98 on Tuesday (Dec 15).
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said Ungku Aziz s death was a big loss to the country, with his service to the country and community very much appreciated. He not only contributed in academia, but also came up with the idea to set up Tabung Haji and Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka, he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Born in Hampstead, London, England on Jan 28,1922, Ungku Aziz was a renowned economist, administrator, academician, sportsman and writer.
He was the first Malaysian and longest serving vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaya, and the first Malay economist and the sole person to have been accorded the status of royal professor in the country.
