Diversity Institute marks milestones - SUNY Cortland

Diversity Institute marks milestones 05/28/2021  More than 25 years ago, when SUNY Cortland enrolled students of color numbering in the low single digits, a small cohort of faculty undertook to prepare the rest of the faculty and professional staff for a very different future. Today approximately a quarter of the student body self-identifies as other than white/non-Latinx and over the course of some 20 years about 200 colleagues have prepared themselves for that future which is now here, through the Summer Institute for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice. This year’s summer institute is filled, and there’s a waiting list of faculty, professional staff and administrators to participate in the small and very personalized training program from Tuesday, June 1, to Thursday, June 3.

You have all sacrificed for your achievements and persevered despite a pandemic environment that made many typical college experiences impossible. This is especially true for our Class of 2021. That’s why I am happy to share that registration for SUNY Cortland’s Commencement Grad Walk is now open to qualified seniors. Students may register online through the Commencement tab in myRedDragon. Registration will close at midnight on Thursday, April 29. Although we are not able to host visitors at this ceremony, I hope our graduating seniors feel a sense of pride if they choose to participate. We certainly are proud of you. This event, which will be streamed live for your families, is a safe way to celebrate your SUNY Cortland achievements in a campus venue.
