PITTSBURGH (AP) â Two Lake Erie lighthouses have reopened for tours, and the reward for climbing their circular staircases is a clear view of ships gliding through shimmering blue water.
Since the 1800s, the Presque Isle Light Station in Presque Isle State Park and the Erie Land Lighthouse on this cityâs east side have beamed light up to 15 miles across the water, allowing ship and boat captains to navigate, find a channel and get safely to shore.
For centuries, a long beam of constant light was a captainâs only hope for finding safe harbor in fog-shrouded waters at night.
The Erie Land Lighthouse is about to get a new keeper.
Presque Isle Lighthouse staff will oversee daily operations of the iconic Erie landmark starting April 1 under terms of a two-year management agreement finalized Wednesday between the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority and the Presque Isle Lighthouse board of directors.
The historic 48-foot-tall sandstone tower is located at the foot of Lighthouse Street, about three blocks east of East Avenue, in Erie.
Under the agreement, the Port Authority will continue to own the two-acre property, which includes a residence, currently vacant, on the lighthouse grounds. The Port Authority is excited to partner with a local nonprofit who has a proven track record with activating historic lighthouses, said Brenda Sandberg, the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority’s executive director. The Authority is looking forward to the active use of the Land Lighthouse drawing residents and visitors alike to Erie s east side.
