Take a look at this video. You can see where crews were hard at work trying to clear the snow. So far students have missed seven days because of snow. But the superintendent tells me not to be alarmed. They average close to 18 snow days a year here in the mountains. In avery county, they make it up by adding time on to the school day earlier in the year so the students get the hours required by the state. The superintendent recalled one winter when he was young when they actually missed 45 days. Didnt go a single day in january. So compared to that, missing sevens not too bad. And for the first time in a long, long time, we didnt miss any days before christmas. That was because we had that very warm december. Theres one of those gusts i was talking about. Me the man killed in that crash was 68yearold, James Howard Cook of lexington, North Carolina. Officials also say that cook reported engine trouble before the crash. A spokesman at the Union County Sheriffs office said the first reports of this crash came in around 6 45 this evening. Now cmpds helicopter helped Union County Deputies to locate the plane in a wooded area a half mile down here and also new salem road. Officials say cook was the only person on board. They also explains more about his flight. The pilot had flown a client to daytona earlier today. On his way home, was due back in the lexington area around 7 00 p. M. They tell me right now theyre currently working nine different wrecks along a two mile stretch of interstate 40 near the claremont avenue. You can see one of those wrecks where a tractor trailer went from the eastbound lanes across into the westbound lanes. All of this being blamed on that freezing rain thats formed black ice on the ways here. Like these accidents along highway 31 south of hickory.
