Over 150 of the world’s leading musicians have written to the Prime Minister demanding reform in the music industry. Luminaries from Sir Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey and David Gilmour to Kate Bush, Kano and Annie Lennox want Johnson to shake up the law on royalties paid from music streaming so that artists stop being “exploited”.

When it comes to music streaming services, one of the biggest differences between Apple Music and Spotify is that the latter offers users the option of listening for free in exchange for certain limitations and ads. Spotify is currently leading the way in terms of music streaming, so could a missing piece of the Apple Music puzzle be a free tier?

Could having a free listening tier encourage more people to adopt Apple Music? Perhaps, but that will never happen. Speaking during a hearing with the British government about the economics of music streaming services and whether or not artists are paid enough, Apple’s head of music publishing Elena Segal suggested that there would never be a free version of Apple Music.
