director who of course brought us the 18-hour baseball series. ken, what was steinbrenner s importance to the game? i think he lives a legacy of sort of both winning excellence, success and, of course, a lot of that success has to do with the value of the franchise growing from the paltry $8 million or $10 million that they bought the yankees for to the $2 billion today. but he s also left a legacy of turmoil. like all great figures, he strode across the stage of baseball and dominated the last several decades in a way i can think of no other owner dominating this sport. i mean, he changed managers 23 times in 20 years. 23 times. some of them more than once, billy martin. so, that is turmoil. i felt in a way that he was better suited to own a football team, because one of the great lessons of baseball is that if you fail seven times out of ten, and don mattingly knows this, you re a .300 hitter. and you do that for 30 years, you re in cooperstown in the hall of fame.
