Several family members of the Enyobeni tavern tragedy victims took their seats in the Mdantsane regional court on Monday for the start of a weeklong inquest into the mysterious deaths of the 21 young people. Finally, they had hoped, light would be shed on what exactly led to the deaths of their children at the Scenery Park tavern that fateful morning of June 26 2022.

Enyobeni tavern's owner and operational manager Vuyokazi and her husband Siyakhangela Ndevu have been sentenced to fines of R5,000 each, with the alternative of 100 days' imprisonment.
After raids by authorities during the festive season, 21 illegal alcohol-selling businesses were forced to abruptly cease operations, as the Eastern Cape Liquor Board and law enforcement agencies continue to clamp down on the scourge of underage drinking in the province.
