Telecom Bill to be tabled today in Lok Sabha; OTT apps may be kept out, ET Telecom

Telecom Bill: The bill empowers the government to suspend or prohibit use of telecom equipment from countries or a person as may be notified in case of national security threat. Telecom equipment needs to be procured from trusted sources only. To protect telecom consumers, the bill proposes that prior consent should be taken for receiving promotional messages, advertising, etc, sources said.

Government likely to table Telecommunications Bill 2023 in Lok Sabha on Monday

"The President has been informed about the Telecommunications Bill 2023. It is likely to be introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday, December 18," a source told PTI. The Cabinet had cleared the bill in August. The draft Telecommunications Bill released in 2023 had proposed to bring over-the-top or the internet based calling and messaging apps under the definition of telecommunications to enhance users safety.
