Ranchi: As many as 26 girls from the tribal hamlets of Khunti formally graduated from the US Consulate General Kolkata’s English Access Microscholarship programme at a ceremony held in Khunti’s Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya on Saturday.
The English Access Microscholarship programme, funded by the regional English language office of the US Embassy in New Delhi and the US Consulate General Kolkata, is a two-year programme aimed at providing a foundation of English language skills to bright, economically disadvantaged children and youth from 13-20 years through after-school instruction and intensive sessions.
The programme was launched in Jharkhand in November 2018. As per the US Consul General Kolkata’s office, the programme has been extended to 1 lakh children globally since its launch in 2004. At present, there are 1,800 children enrolled in the programme nationally. Upon completion of the course, the trainees are eligible for various student exchange programmes.

As many as 26 girls, most of them survivors of child marriage and human trafficking, were conferred with certificates by the US Consulate General in Khunti on Saturday for successfully completing a two-year foundation course in speaking and learing English.

The U.S. Mission to Pakistan is currently seeking applications for the English Access Microscholarship Program.
Since its inception in 2004, approximately 200,000 students in more than 85 countries have participated in the program’s two years of study through at least 360 hours of intensive, after-school, and weekend English language programming. Access provides a foundation of English language skills to bright, economically disadvantaged students, primarily 13 to 20 years of age. The program introduces participants to critical thinking skills, U.S. culture, and democratic values; improves their potential to fully contribute to the socio-economic development of their countries; and increases their ability to compete for and participate in U.S. exchange and study programs.

Visakhapatnam, Dec 18 : The US Consulate in Hyderabad has launched an English language teaching programme at a college in Vizag which will benefit 50 bright and economically disadvantaged girl students.
The English Access Microscholarship Programme, also known as the Access Programme , has been launched at the St. Joseph s College for Women.
