Kingston mayor orders affordable rent requirement for new projects

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Mayor Steve Noble has signed an executive order that would require all developers seeking approval for plans of more than five apartments to make 10 percent of them affordable. The affordable housing order would allow up a family of five people with a household income of $72,350 to qualify.  In Kingston, Executive Orders are in effect for 30 days, at which time they can be renewed for another 30 days, said Summer Smith, director of the city communications and community engagement. - Advertisement - The executive order applies to housing proposed across Kingston with affordable defined as 80% of Area Mean Income (AMI), “based on current Ulster County statistics with adjustments for family size,” a press release says.

As of now, the project is the only one under consideration by the city that fits into Mayor Steve Noble’s recently issued executive order compelling private developers of more than five unit new apartment buildings to make 10 percent of them affordable. The executive order is only good for 30 days but can be extended.
