I wrote a biography of dwightthe eisenhower who is a warrior, was determined to keep us out of asd war. But before i talk about my book they asked me to talk a little bit about the writing life and my own expenses as a writer, so i will. I got out of college and i tried to write the Great American novel, and i wrote about 80d pages of it and i brought it tor my father to read. My father is a book editor, and they came down for breakfast in the morning and he looked up at me and he said, its awful. Hoolt that was our entire conversation. I applied to law school that e ternoon. Pe [laughter] this was before parents believed in selfesteem and all that. Ill. It was awful. It was a mercy killing. Its 45 minutes. Hello. Thank you for the introduction. This is very cool. This is my first book, so if i look like im really not accustomed to this, its because im really not accustomed to this. So the book is called the big truck that went by. And theres a spoiler in the subtitle. How the world came to save haiti and left behind a disaster, im going to read to you a little bit about it and talk about it, and then i hope that we have a good discussion as this topic usually provokes. So im going to start by reading from chapter one, the end. Before i do im going to give myself some water. This brand of water is in the book. Had i known that i would have picked that section. I can try to look for it in a little bit. These are actually delivered to haiti after the earthquake by the u. S. Military. Its called fiji water for a reason. It comes from fiji, which is not in the caribbean, and it was sent at quite a lot of expense and quite a lot of effort. It was a very beautiful project for ph
Cleveland. Oscar fulsome had been married and had a daughter. Cleveland was a bachelors of cleveland kind of accepted responsibility to pay for the child to go to an orphanage. But heres where the other part of the scandal comes in. Oscar fulsome dies a few years later in a carriage accident writing, driving his carriage, recklessly drunk, apparently breaks his neck. He leaves a widow and his young girl. Grover cleveland makes an enormous amount of money as his law partner, and cleveland kind of takes care of the widow and the young girl, pays for them, sets them up in a nice home. He becomes the godfather, if you will to the little girl. They are very close. She calls him on coca leaves, which should be part of a hint. He pays to send her to college. What happens is as francis is growing up, clevelands relationship with her changes. Changes from uncle cleve to a romantic interest. Cleveland start sending her letters and poems and roses. Dangerous convictions is to give you a sense of wire rope. Someone has said that you write to scratch an itch or to deal with something that is bothering you, that is certainly the case with this book. And i would say, first of all, there is this may come as no surprise to you a real frustration with how the media, the Mainstream Media and the partisan media covers what politicians do in congress. A lot of frustration that we simply cannot say completely what you want to say, even about what the problems are or what you are trying to do. And the second thing is that there is, as in my case, considerable confusion about our republican colleagues. And so the confusion about what they were really thinking. So i spent the better part of four years thinking and writing about revising this book. I do, as he said, work for the association of american publishers.
