The contest includes entries from news outlets in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico. The News&Guide won 13 awards for reporting, photography and design. Reporters Emily Mieure, Mike Koshmrl, Billy Arnold and Mieure/Arnold won first-place awards in legal features, science and technology news, beat reporting and breaking news, respectively. Director of Visuals Bradly J. Boner won first place in spot news photography, while staff photographer Ryan Dorgan won second place awards for feature photography and news photography.

Months later, Sánchez Nieto is still receiving medical care for his recovery.

Instead of the usual eco-porn about grizzly bears with teeth bared, we had a mother and her four children being looked after so they can continue to live like bears. It was amazing to me.
