Sask residents come together to donate SGI rebate to charity

  REGINA After hearing he would be getting a sizeable rebate from SGI in the spring, Marc Spooner was wondering about how he should spend it. “I saw that we were going to get approximately $285 back from SGI that was unexpected. Then I got thinking to myself, what if we all pooled our money together and did something neat, something big,” said Spooner.  Spooner formed a Facebook group called Field of Dreams: Let’s do something together with our SGI Rebates. “I was thinking maybe preserving a chunk of the prairie, or some boreal forest, or some project like that. We could really leave a legacy for Saskatchewanians for decades and lifetimes to come,” he said. 

Community-spirited Cumbrian young farmers give helping hand at Covid Vaccination Centres

Helping hand:Community spirited young farmers COMMUNITY-minded young farmers have pulled together this month to give a hel;ping hand at local Covid Vaccination Clinics. All ten clubs from the YFC movement in the southern district have volunteered on a variety of days and in all weather for hours on end. The young farmers have helped out at Captain French Surgery in Kendal and Nutwood Medical Practice in Grange-Over-Sands. Grayrigg YFC have also assisted at Flu Clinics and helped prepare the surgery for the Covid Vaccine Clinic. During the month of January, the Southern District have been volunteering at two local COVID Vaccination Clinics and will continue to do so at Captain French Surgery in Kendal and the Nutwood Medical Practice in Grange-over-Sands. Grayrigg YFC have also assisted at Flu Clinics and helped prepare the surgery for the COVID Vaccine Clinic.

Praise: Jess Rogerson, SD chair CUMBRIAN young farmers have been praised for their resilience and hard work during the Covid pandemic. Lockdown restrictions forced young farmers clubs to deliver their 2020 programme of activity digitally, streaming live stockjudging and public speaking competitions, as well as hosting weekly virtual meetings to maintain member engagement. One virtual competition the ‘Toilet Roll Challenge’ captured the imagination on the internet with 335,042 viewings of the video that went global. The 39th Southern District’s AGM, which saw a departure from its usual format and was hosted via Zoom, heard how the district’s clubs had raised a total of £17,106 for charities and good causes. One cause close to the hearts of the young farmers saw the SD turn out in force to campaign against the closure of Newton Rigg College at Penrith, with a tractor run taking place in September.
