Roberto s Ristorante and Pizzeria, 483 Spring Road, is proposing two parking lots, which neighbors oppose. Late last week, mayoral candidate Mark Mulliner returned a $5,000 donation from Elmhurst Neighbors United, which opposes the parking lots. (Google Maps)
ELMHURST, IL Amid a controversy, Elmhurst mayoral candidate Mark Mulliner late last week returned a $5,000 contribution given by a group of residents opposed to a restaurant s parking lot plan.
Elmhurst Neighbors United, which opposes the plan by Roberto s Ristorante and Pizzeria, gave the money March 4 and publicly endorsed Mulliner nearly a week later on Facebook.
When Elmhurst Patch contacted Mulliner s campaign Thursday, a spokesman called the endorsement and donation a pleasant surprise. At some point in the next day, the campaign returned it.

Elmhurst School District 205 is requiring coronavirus testing for students attending in-person classes. However, the Illinois State Board of Education says a district has no such authority. (Shutterstock)
ELMHURST, IL The state told Patch last week that school districts have no legal authority to require saliva testing for in-person learning.
But Elmhurst School District 205 is setting aside that legal advice, saying it believes it has the power to mandate such screening.
On Friday, Elmhurst Patch obtained an email from Superintendent Dave Moyer to a parent earlier that day.
Subscribe We have consulted with our attorneys, and the (Illinois State Board of Education s) position is not legally binding, he told the parent. Our attorneys have advised us that we have the legal authority to require testing for in-person attendance.

Elmhurst says it is exempt from a law that requires towns with less than 10 percent affordable housing to turn in plans to bring more such housing. (Google Maps)
ELMHURST, IL Elmhurst has failed to submit an affordable housing plan to the state because it says it is exempt from the law requiring such submissions, an official said Wednesday.
This issue came up after candidates for city office were asked during forums last weekend why the city has not filed an affordable housing plan, which the state says is required for towns where less than 10 percent of housing is considered affordable. Elmhurst s rate is 8.2 percent. Even the three aldermen running for mayor did not appear to know the reason behind the lack of a plan.
