Salute to Volunteers In troubled times, “look for the helpers” ELLSWORTH Mr. Fred Rogers taught many of us that in times of crisis, “look for the helpers.” “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,’” he shared.  We see this time and again, from communities rallying behind their own in times of tragedy to neighbors checking in on each other and delivering home-cooked meals.  But what happens when it becomes unsafe for people to gather to help each other? Do the helpers go away? Does volunteerism stop?

Officers help area residents in crisis Ellsworth Police Log Week of March 18 ELLSWORTH Police responded to separate reports of two local residents suffering mental health issues. Officer Adam Bouchard spoke with a person in crisis on March 12 who was subsequently taken to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital for an evaluation. On March 14, Officer Amie Torrey responded to a report of a woman with a knife. Torrey found the woman, who was then taken in for a mental health evaluation. Harassment and threats Officers are investigating a complaint of threatening that was reported on March 9. Police received a report of threatening situation on March 10 from a resident who just wanted it documented with no action taken.

Council weighs in on proposed Ped/Bike Path extension ELLSWORTH Three seasons of walking may trump four seasons for the proposed Ellsworth Ped/Bike Path extension, after councilors heard details of a draft feasibility study on Feb. 25 and questioned costs and liability in maintaining the extension path during winter snow and ice if the project moves forward. As proposed, the 0.75-mile connector trail would begin at the intersection of Birch Avenue and Spring Street, where the Ellsworth trail now ends, continue down Spring Street and cross Main Street to connect with the Sunrise Trail at the intersection of Beals Avenue and High Street.

DANIELLE MACE PHOTO March 2, 2021 on News ELLSWORTH The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating its 65th year in a new location. The chamber is moving this week across the parking lot to a newly refurbished space next to Martha’s Diner.  The new address is 151 High St., Suite 5. The space, formerly occupied by a nail salon and hair salon, has been gutted and renovated to make an airy visitor center with offices and storage. The entire front is a large expanse of glass. Eleven-foot ceilings in the visitor center give a contemporary look to the chamber’s new home.
