LSU study show blight abatement is good place to start addressing crime

View Comments As of July 2, there were 47 homicides in Shreveport/Caddo Parish, all but one are Shreveport residents. While there are no quick remedies or one-method solutions to getting a handle on Shreveport’s crime and violence, a recent study by a group of Louisiana State University (LSU) professors, reveals approaches that can bring results. Conducted by the LSU Department of Sociology professors Matthew Valasik, Elizabeth E. Braulta, and Stephen M. Martinez, “Forecasting Homicide in the Red stick: Risk Terrain Modeling and the Spatial Influence of Urban Blight on Lethal Violence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana” the research looks at environmental factors and social structure in determining areas most at risk of experiencing homicides.
