Augustin Lorfils had refused to confront the tragedy that had defined his life. His mother and five siblings drowned after they were pushed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Palm Beach by gun-wielding smugglers ferrying Haitian migrants in a 28-foot speedboat from the Bahamas. The incident, which took place on Aug. 13, 1979, has the dubious distinction of being the first documented case of Haitian refugees dumped at sea.
