family who made it their mission to help the homeless. holloway said the man he knew as brother john had just delivered a meal of hot fish and chips to him late last night when someone in a van pulled up beside the good samaritan s van and opened fire on his family. three shots and then a pause and then two more shots. reporter: the 29-year-old father is now on life support with gunshot wounds to the head. his wife and 3-year-old daughter also got hit. but are expected to survive. i am trying to understand the situation. it s not easy to understand. i m not ever going to understand it. reporter: those the family and his family routinely helped say they re hurting. they say brother john nourished both their bodies and their souls. he is a man of god. he gives food. if he has time, he ll come over and give a prayer. he will say a prayer with the food. so i don t know why things like this happen to good people. reporter: now those touched by the family s generosity a
force base east of interstate 80. the crews were called just after 1:00 this afternoon. thick, black smoke as you see, well that could be seen from sacramento, livermore, and san francisco. neighbors who live within a mile of those flames were told stay inside. robert lyles on what investigators think started it all. robert. reporter: just the past 30 minutes, that large platoon of firefighters disbanded, but they are still on scene as i step out of the way. that s evidence by that ladder truck that is still extended above a one story high pile of molten plastic. firefighters tell us what burned here was much more than produce crates. instead they describe it as gasoline in solid form. so they say that s why when a worker torched one crate, five acres of crates went up like a golden inferno. and you re about to learn why water pressure allowed this fire to grow out of control. how do you fight something that is effectively solid gasoline? it s very difficult. it s bee

able to capture the aftermath. i want to show you some of that video now. this is video posted on youtube. and we have frozen this picture to show what may be a gun on the sidewalk. it appears to have a black handle and silver barrel. police say this is key evidence in the shooting that happened yesterday afternoon near a bayview train platform. officers say they were chasing a 19-year-old suspect who did not pay his fare on muni. that s when authorities say the man opened fire as he ran. police returned fire and killed him. video of the incident shows a handgun near the shooting, and with help from witnesses, this afternoon police identified the man who authorities say took the gun from the scene. the recent violence has angered people in the community. overnight demonstrators gathered in san francisco s mission neighborhood, protesting the officer-involved shooting. and community activists are already planning a press conference for tomorrow to demand an independent investi
