Kolkata: Nandigram in East Medinipur of Bengal played up to its role as the epicentre of the state’s assembly election, as confusion reigned late on Sunday over who had won the seat.
The high-octane and often communal campaigning in Nandigram had seen chief minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee make the unusual choice of switching from her Bhowanipore mainstay to take on her former aide and new BJP entrant Suvendu Adhikari.

Kolkata records the lowest turnout and Birbhum the highest
Isolated incidents of violence were reported in the last phase of polling for 35 seats in West Bengal on Thursday as 76.07% voters had exercised their franchise till 5 p.m.
The marathon exercise, which started on March 27, has come to a close with Kolkata recording the lowest turnout at 57.53%. Birbhum recorded the highest turnout (81.87%) followed by Malda (80.06%) and Murshidabad (78.07%).
An estimated 75 per cent votes were cast in the seventh and penultimate phase of the West Bengal assembly election 2021, which was by and large peaceful on Monday.

High voter turnout and sporadic incidents of violence marked the fifth phase of elections in West Bengal on Saturday.
Polling was held in 45 Assembly seats across six districts three in north Bengal and three in south Bengal. Till 5 p.m. about 78.36 % voters had exercised their franchise.
