Over 84 lakh voters in West Bengal will decide the political fate of 283 candidates on Thursday, when 35 assembly constituencies go to polls in the eighth and final phase, amid a raging second wave of COVID-19.
Congress says ‘prepared for elections’
Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal on Friday said that his party is prepared for the elections, while laying out the alliances the Congress is forging in the key states that are headed for polls. “The Congress is totally prepared for the elections. We will appeal to the people for change, for good governance. The alliance for Assam has been finalised. The alliance in Kerala and West Bengal is also almost finalised. In Tamil Nadu, talks are underway on alliance,” Venugopal said.

This is the first major set of elections to be held in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic after the Bihar election.
The Election Commission will likely hold elections in Bengal in seven-eight phases. In 2016, elections were held in six phases from April 4-May 5. The ECI data showed that about 6,400 polling booths are deemed sensitive in the state.

Voting for five assembly elections will begin on March 27, with West Bengal having the maximum eight phases continuing till April 29, while counting of votes for the four states and one union territory will be done on May 2, the Election Commission said on Friday.
Assam assembly polls will be conducted in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6, while polling for the Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry assembly elections will take place in a single phase on April 6.
