“This winter in the Northeast definitely was one for the record books and not in the surf department,” said local photog Trevor Murphy. “The pandemic, grey skies and flat spells were the norm. Surfers tend to be more tuned into subtle seasonal shifts than most folks. This is not an academic or theoretical or ethereal pursuit it’s straight-up, real-world selfish. Because even though the weather on land may rarely change much in a place like Southern California throughout the year, the Pacific Ocean has very distinct aquatic divides. And the better one understands those divides, the better one’s chances are at scoring more surf.

Largest swell peaks late week/over weekend from Central America to California
Southern California standouts go head-high-plus, see decent conditions through weekend
If you spend your time window-shopping warm-water waves via Surfline’s cams (Puerto Escondido, anyone?), chances are you’ve seen south swell in the water for the first time in a long time. Right on cue for the holiday, a run of Southern Hemisphere swell is in the water that’s sending waves all the way from Peru to Alaska, hitting everywhere in between. This particular run will be highlighted by solid barrels at Puerto Escondido on Friday and Saturday, and high-performance sessions at standout SoCal spots this weekend not to mention days of rippable surf at the usual spring/summer destinations.
