The South Pacific’s a workhorse this season, and it won’t be put out to pasture anytime soon. Simply put, July is a great month to be a California and Hawaii surfer (so long as you’re exposed to and within reach of the Southern Hemisphere swells). And even with heaps more swell on the way, there are some important changes afoot that’ll determine which zone will see the most surf.
Meanwhile in the Hawaiian Islands, the best swell of the summer so far is lining up for early July. A pattern change in the Underworld shifts the focus from one side of the basin to the other as the tropics become a bigger provider, but any quality surf resulting from these temperamental storms is often fleeting.

We covered the heck out of last week’s solid south swell, which turned out to be the biggest of the season thus far especially in Central America and Mexico where, unlike California, conditions were largely favorable. South-facing breaks in the Golden State saw no shortage of long period swell as it peaked on Saturday, but man, those winds…less-than-ideal in many spots, though places like the Wedge and Malibu which can both deal with some wind and act as catcher’s mitts to straight south swell managed to see some fine moments.
