Welcome to KAZU s weekly news roundup for 2/12/21. Here you ll find the top local stories of the week and a few select national stories from NPR.
A year ago the COVID-19 virus seemed like thunder from a far off storm
. Yes, there was an outbreak in China, a few cases in Europe and even an infection in Washington state, but many asked how bad could it be? Valentine’s Day 2020 included hugs and kisses, the Niners had just lost to the Chiefs in front of a packed Super Bowl 54 crowd and the films Sonic the Hedgehog and Birds of Prey were playing to full movie theaters. A year later many of those same movie theaters still display posters for old movies in their “coming attractions” windows. The word “zoom” (to move or travel quickly) has transitioned from being a verb to a noun - Zoom. Weddings and graduation ceremonies have been missed, family members separated and businesses shuttered. We’ve lost a quarter of a million o
The Monterey County Board of Supervisors tried to clear up any misunderstandings about the timing and rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations this week. At its regular meeting, the Board heard from various groups involved in the rollout who said they’re ready, they just need more doses of vaccine. KAZU’S Doug McKnight attended the meeting and spoke with KAZU s Erika Mahoney about the county’s plans.
Erika Mahoney (EM):
Doug, how long are local officials anticipating it will take to complete the vaccination effort in Monterey County?
Doug McKnight (DM): We keep hearing this phrase “herd immunity.” Monterey County Health Officer Dr. Edward Moreno describes that as the point where enough people in the county have been vaccinated so the disease can no longer spread. And he said that’s the goal. Moreno showed off his math skills at the meeting. He says herd immunity is 80 percent of the county. Taking into consideration that each person needs two shots, Moreno said, that
Another 80 percent of the county s children would also need to be vaccinated, he said. To date, the vaccines currently available have only been authorized to people age 16 and up. In order to speed this up, we really do need more than 2,000-to-4,000 doses per week coming into Monterey County, Moreno said. Roughly 32,000 county residents are currently eligible for the vaccine by virtue of being health care workers, long-term care facility and in-home care workers and long-term care and nursing facility residents.
The county also has 38,660 residents age 75 and older, who are eligible for vaccinations following updated guidance earlier this month from federal and state officials. Between Dec. 8, 2020, and Jan. 23, 2021, 13,402 county residents received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to Moreno.
